Doctoral students in all majors shall have a solid and in-depth grasp of professional knowledge in industrial economics, while systematically and comprehensively mastering knowledge in related disciplines of modern economics and management. They should be able to understand the major research achievements and latest trends in their professional fields, stand at the academic frontier, conduct innovative research by applying internationally advanced research methods and tools in combination with specific domestic and international institutional contexts, and possess high-level international academic communication capabilities. After graduation, they shall be competent in undertaking high-level scientific research, engaging in higher education, or holding important management positions in their professional and related fields, and play a leading role in teaching, research, and management.
The specific majors and research directions are as follows:
Theoretical Economics (World Economy Research Direction): It focuses on research fields such as international economics, macroeconomics, economic globalization and regionalization, international trade theories and policies, the transmission of international financial risks, and financial crises. This program cultivates students to fully and systematically master the basic theories of Marxist economics, become familiar with the theories and analytical methods of major schools of Western economics, acquire solid and extensive professional knowledge in world economy, world economic history, and international relations, and gain a comprehensive understanding of the development trends of the world economy and the cutting-edge academic dynamics in the economic discipline.
Applied Economics (Industrial Economics Research Direction): As a key discipline of Shanghai Municipality and the Ministry of Finance, it has high-end research institutions and think tanks such as the China Industrial Development Research Institute. This discipline aims to cultivate specialized talents who systematically master professional knowledge in industrial organization and industrial structure, have the research ability to independently analyze and solve problems, are competent in research or teaching work in relevant fields of this discipline, and can engage in high-level management work in government agencies, enterprises, and public institutions.
Applied Economics (International Trade Research Direction): Its research focuses on international trade theories and policies, regional economic integration, intellectual property protection and innovation, etc. The development of International Trade at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics can be traced back to the establishment of the Department of World Economy in 1979, boasting a long history of running education programs. The International Trade major was re-established in 1984, and a master's program in International Trade was added in the same period. In 1998, the discipline obtained the right to award doctoral degrees, becoming the third institution in China to gain this qualification. Currently, it is a characteristic major under the key construction of the Ministry of Education.
Business Administration (Enterprise Management Research Direction): As a dominant disciplinary direction, it focuses on research fields including organizational management, strategy, and human resource management. It has remarkable advantages in applied academic research and talent cultivation. This program trains postgraduates in this disciplinary direction to have a solid and broad theoretical foundation in management and economics, a good command of enterprise strategy and business practices, the ability to manage enterprises and independently solve problems, and develop into compound and export-oriented enterprise management talents with creativity, decision-making ability, and organizational ability, who achieve all-round development in quality, knowledge, ability, and physical fitness.

It has extensive academic and social influence in the field of marketing, with teaching teams for Shanghai Municipal Excellent Courses and other high-quality courses. It has won a number of provincial and ministerial-level scientific research and teaching achievement awards, undertaken many research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Social Science Fund of China, as well as research projects of the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Municipality, and achieved a series of important research results. Business Administration (Entrepreneurship Management Research Direction): It mainly studies the laws and science of entrepreneurial behavior based on innovation. The program aims to cultivate students with an international perspective and insight into the business frontier, as well as a broad interdisciplinary theoretical foundation featuring innovation and entrepreneurship.
