Mr. Rob England, founder of Teal Unicorn and Managing Director of Two Hills Ltd, along with Dr. Cherry Vu, CEO of Teal Unicorn, were invited to College of Business of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics to deliver an inspiring lecture titled "Better Work for a Better World" to students of the International Business program.Drawing on practical experience and successful case studies from Teal Unicorn, the two experts provided in-depth insights into the globally leading concept of Open Management.

During the lecture, Mr. Rob England and Dr. Cherry Vu first highlighted that the 21st century is a VUCA era marked by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. Traditional management models can no longer keep pace with such a rapidly changing environment, giving rise to the concept of Open Management. This approach emphasizes systems thinking, distributed leadership, and a human-centered work environment, aiming to help organizations achieve better performance, greater employee well-being, and more sustainable social value.

The two speakers illustrated the tangible impact of "Open Management" through multiple real-world case studies. For instance, a media conglomerate saw its profits increase twenty-fivefold within just four months of adopting Teal Unicorn’s open management approach. A logistics firm experienced a 52% surge in new clients and a 22% boost in revenue within a single week of implementing the new work practices. And a bank branch achieved a 158% increase in sales over ten weeks, surpassing its annual sales target ahead of schedule. These success stories vividly showcased Teal Unicorn’s outstanding capabilities in helping organizations achieve transformative growth.

During the lecture, Mr. Rob England and Dr. Cherry Vu elaborated on the fundamental principles of "Open Management." They emphasized that in an ever-changing world, individuals must cultivate a diverse set of skills to adapt to future uncertainties. From a human resources perspective, companies should encourage employees to evolve from “I-shaped” professionals—those with deep expertise in one area—to “T-shaped” talents who possess both specialized knowledge and a broad range of complementary skills. Furthermore, they noted that skills acquired through the learning process—such as research, writing, and self-discipline—will be essential assets for long-term career success.

Moreover, Teal Unicorn emphasizes that the reconfiguration of work should center around individual capabilities rather than fixed roles. Teams should be structured based on members’ unique skill sets, with a focus on overall team performance rather than individual KPIs. Compensation should also reflect one's contribution to team outcomes, in order to incentivize collaboration. The experts also introduced practical tools such as “Lean Coffee,” which enhance meeting efficiency and promote effective teamwork.

When addressing cultural transformation, Mr. Rob England and Dr. Cherry Vu emphasized that true change must arise from evolving work practices and management approaches, rather than being imposed top-down upon employees. They advocate moving beyond traditional management mindsets and promoting organizational cultural change to better adapt to rapidly evolving environments. In their collaborative projects, they have facilitated profound cultural shifts within organizations through simulation games and workshops, encouraging self-organization and innovation among employees.

In conclusion, the two experts highlighted that adaptability is key to an organization’s survival and growth in a fast-changing world. Organizations should embrace a certain level of risk and address future challenges through continuous improvement and innovation. They encouraged students to actively learn and apply the principles of “open management,” noting that only with an open mindset can we create better work, better lives, and ultimately drive social progress.
